Alistair Stevens Campaigning in the High Peak

High Quality Tory Literature

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 15th Apr 2010

If you have been amazed by the very high quality Tory election literature, then just think for a moment about who is paying the bills.

Yet another secretive Tory donor has been poked out of the woodwork. This time it is Swiss-born UK citizen Henry Angest. He has funnelled almost £7m to the Tories in donations and loans over the past 9 years, according to a national newspaper.

What do we know about Mr Angest? Not a lot. He is bitterly opposed to tighter regulation of the City and to the 50% tax on bankers' bonuses. Readers will not be surprised to learn that he is a wealthy banker.

With friends like this, can we really believe that the Tories will be tough on bankers if they win the election? After what we have been through in the past two years, we would be mad to let a cabal of secretive bankers dictate how our economy should be run.

And here's another surprise - Mr Angest has declined to say where he pays his taxes. Now, who does that remind you of?
