Steve's Experience
Steve was elected to High Peak Borough Council in May 2005 and has served on several committees of the Council. He chaired two sub committees, overseeing community grants and aspects of the Council's leisure services. He was Deputy Mayor of the Borough 2006-7 and is currently a member of the Licensing Panel, Social Inclusion Committee and the Regulatory and Audit Committee.
Steve was also chair of the New Mills Town Council in 2005-6, he is Liberal Democrat Group Leader on New Mills Town Council.
Steve has been the Lib Dem Constituency Chair for over two and a half years. During this period the party has made significant strides in the High Peak, including the opening of a constituency office and a steady and noticeable growth in grassroots membership. He is pleased that in the recent local elections the Lib Dems overtook Labour in the share of the popular vote, making the parliamentary seat a two horse race between the Liberal Democrats and the Tories.
One of Steve's long-cherished hopes in the wider political arena is that one day, at long last, this country will move to a written constitution and fixed term parliaments. He believes that the way Tony Blair's and now Gordon Brown's New Labour has run the country has brought its institutions into the most shameful disrepute. Local Labour MP Tom Levitt has joined in, trying to stop Freedom of Information applying to MPs in future and meanwhile gold-plating his own pension at the expense of ordinary people.
Steve has always had a strong admiration for Harry Truman, 33rd President of the United States; a very ordinary man who became president due to unforeseen circumstances. A man of the highest integrity and scrupulously honest, a trait Steve feels is very lacking at every level of politics in today's society.
