Campaign for Bench Road Pelican Crossing
15 June 2008

Buxton Liberal Democrat Karl Dunscombe is campaigning hard for a pelican crossing for the residents of Queens Road in Fairfield. Local residents have approached both County Councillor Barbara Wilson and Tom Levitt MP and got nowhere, so they asked Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the High Peak Steve Sharp to take up the fight.

Steve said "As soon as I was approached I had no hesitation in immediately speaking with Karl so we could get out to do a site visit monitoring the traffic and talking to the local residents.  We couldn't believe the amount of traffic on this section of road.  There are two separate blocks of flats for senior citizens and a school nearby.  If Derbyshire County Council don't come up with a pelican crossing this is just an accident waiting to happen."

Karl added "It is very disappointing that neither the Local Councillor or the MP for the High Peak are prepared to take up the case for these residents, Steve and I have already written to the Highways Officer at Derbyshire County Council highlighting our serious concerns. I will be holding another meeting with the residents to raise the whole profile of this campaign. I am not prepared to accept 'no' to a crossing on a cost basis."

Karl and Steve want a meeting with Senior Traffic Manager at Derbyshire County Council at the earliest opportunity and want  both the traffic and the pedestrian volumes to be monitored as a first step. The fact it is a bus route, a school is nearby and a number of disabled residents struggle to cross this very busy road should certainly demonstrate the requirement for a pelican crossing at this site immediately.

Liberal Democrats in the High Peak back Carers’ Week
5th June 2008

Buxton leading Liberal Democrat Karl Dunscombe has given his backing to Carers’ Week to show support for the thousands of local residents who carer for dependent relatives and friends.

Carers Week is a partnership of 10 UK-wide charities (Carers UK, Counsel and Care; Crossroads Caring for Carers, Help the Hospices, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society, Neurological Alliance, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and WRVS) to promote the unpaid work done by the six million people in the UK who support and care for others.

Carers Week starts on 9th June and runs until 15th June.

“I decided to back Carers’ Week as I have seen how hard many people work to support relatives and friends with illnesses or conditions which make them dependent on others,” said Karl.

“One in six people cares in some way for another person. That is a huge army of people who by their efforts help others to live as normal a life as possible at home, rather than being dependent on health services and other groups for support.

“Many carers work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and too often, the contribution they make is not recognised by society generally. By supporting Carers’ Week, I hope to highlight the work carers do and hopefully raise awareness amongst the general public of their importance.”
