Background

High Peak has been my home for more than 20 years. My family and I are rooted in this constituency and every aspect of our lives is devoted to making it a better place to live and work.

I studied History and Politics at Manchester Polytechnic and I have since immersed myself in the politics and life of my hometown, New Mills, after coming to live here in 1988. I have been a town councillor for three years, serving as chairman in 2008 and I am currently chair of the Leisure and Parks committee.

But my politics is that of the real world. As a property surveyor, I am painfully aware of the effects of the recession and how difficult life is for ordinary people in High Peak. Having worked for Barclays Bank for four years before studying for my degree, I also have a clear grasp of the tough fiscal choices that need to be made to fight our way out of the recession.

My other passion is cricket. I played cricket semi-professionally for teams in the Manchester area and have represented Lancashire second team on occasions. I have also coached and played cricket in New Zealand. As a cricketer, I play to win and - no matter what most polls say - I believe High Peak is winnable by the Liberal Democrats. We have already shown how great teamwork can produce a stunning victory like the recent Blackbrook by-election.

My six point plan for the High Peak

  • More investment in jobs

  • More affordable and social housing

  • More money for rural public transport

  • Immediate help for High Peak hill farmers

  • Lower business rates for small businesses

  • An end to university tuition fees

In addition:

Liberal Democrats need to promote our green credentials and point out that we are the only major party committed to a referendum on Europe.

My Work for High Peak

  • Chairman of High Peak Constituency Executive in 2008 and 2009.

  • Chairman of High Peak Cricket Development Group, working with Derbyshire CCC, the Borough Council, local schools and 14 cricket clubs in the High Peak area.

  • Member New Mills Festival Committee (I ran a successful music festival in 2009)

  • Played and coached cricket at New Mills Cricket Club for 17 years as well as coaching juniors with the High Peak District Side.
