With regard to the re-opening of the Woodhead Line I appreciate the benefits that would ensue. As you may be aware, it is Liberal Democrats policy to support public transport, this being the best way to cut carbon emissions from transport without trying to limit people's opportunities to travel. In particular, we have set out plans to reopen thousands of miles of railway tracks and stations, funded by cutting capital spending on roads by £3bn, and this new Rail Expansion Fund would lead to the biggest expansion of the rail network since the Victorian era.

It is undeniable that the world is becoming ever more dependent on scientific and technological progress. In my opinion, to optimise the advantages, and minimise the disadvantages, of such developments, and to identify potential problems, rigorous scientific principles need to be applied to the assessment of their benefits, risks and costs.

I think the probation service is enormously important if we are to ensure people are helped back into society and the public are to be reassured that the resources are in place to police the system effectively and I share your concern over the current plans to cut front line service. I am aware that in some parts of Derbyshire there are plans in place to cut teams very severely.
